Before and After...

In this Section it is possible to see striking differences in some of the donkeys, as they arrive at the Shelter and after some time, living there, physicaly and emotionaly fully rehabilitated.  

Unfortunately, there aren’t photo records on all the cases that come to the Shelter.

However, these pictures speak for themselves.

Before -
Old Man (Velhotinho) on the day that we met him, in August 2009. His hooves were so deformed and over grown, due to severe negligence, to the point that His legs were crooked. He also displayed several wounds, as a result from several falls caused by his difficulties of locomotion. Although in this condition, Old Man was still used to pull a cart...


After - Velhotinho at the Donkey Shelter with his hooves trimmed in September 2009. His rehabilitation was slow and difficult, but today he is quite well.

 

 



 

 

 

 

Before -
Gingko on the day that we saw her for the first time, in August 2009. Just like Velhotinho, these two donkeys were destined to go to the slaughterhouse.



 

 

 


 


After - Gingko already in rehabilitation at the Donkey Shelter in September 2009. Finally with her hooves trimmed, teeth floated, de-wormed and receiving a vitamin supplement, she is beginning to gain weight and she has found joy in again.

 

  

 

 

 



Before -
Carocho in the beginning of 2009. Already with 35 years old, he presented extensive skin lesions and he was underweight. In July 2009, in full recovery.

 

 

 

 

 

After - Carocho and Boneca in September 2009. He gained weight and healed from the bald patches in the skin.

 

  

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Before -
Joan (Joana) when we saw her the first time in August 2009. Due to her physical condition, this donkey was going for slaughter. Joana suffered from summer sores, a condition caused by parasites in the  blood stream. The untreated wounds caused a severe inflammation in one of her legs..


After - Jo later in September 2009. The wounds in her front legs healed up,  but those in the back legs were still under recovery...
